Windows 7

Well, today I received our Windows 7 Release Party Kit. It includes several tote bags, streamers, plates and napkins, a deck of cards, all kinds of software discount coupons,a big poster, several table display cards, a puzzle and of course both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 7. So I’m pretty happy; that’s several hundred dollars I have saved just by throwing a party.
Now, many of you have already received your invitations to the party on Oct. 22, but those of you who haven’t and would like to be here, please send me an email.
This will be an adults-only event; children are not invited; bring your own beverages and something to share!
Until next time,
Orb
fsutil.exe
by crazyskills on Aug.12, 2009, under tech
a nifty tool. It seems that they adjusted the syntax somewhat in Windows 7. To set your memory cache to the “increased” setting, the command is now “fsutil behavior set memoryusage 2″ or that’s what it looks like to me anyway.
Once again, putting this out there 1to document this system change so I can fix it if I break something! and 2in case anyone else out there finds this useful. I haven’t been able to find any documentation yet on the fsutil.exe within 7.
Windows 7, Build 7600
by crazyskills on Jul.23, 2009, under announcement, tech
Windows 7, build 7600 RTM has been completed, Microsoft announced today. It will be available to MSDN and TechNet members on August 6th.
Anyone else think it’s a bit odd that the final build of Windows 7 is Windows version 6.1?
Windows 7, Build 7600, Revisited

The final RTM of Windows 7.
Leaked into the wild?
Not exactly.
Some torrent download locations have what appears to be Build 7600 available for download describing it as the RTM Build.
This is NOT the official RTM Build. This version is a copy of the Release Candidate build 7100 that has been hacked to show the build number as 7600. The official RTM Build is still being tested and will not be finished until it is released later this month.Thank you for understanding.

Windows 7, Build 7600
by crazyskills on Jul.12, 2009, under event, question, tech
This may very well be the final RC for Windows 7. People are speculating that this may be the final RC as well as the RTM for 7, as the build number has jumped so far. “The RTM is expected to be given out to Microsoft partners sometime later this month and launched on October 22, 2009, the day General Availability (GA).”
Note: at the time of this writing, build 7600 is not available from the Windows 7 Beta download page [microsoft.com] (requires MSDN login)

LOVE

I absolutely love Windows 7. I had no idea of the performance capabilities of this beast before I installed 7 on it. Speeeeeeedy. It’s got all the features of Vista, without (most of) the crap I never cared about. And there’s more.. There’s something else streamlined about it, other than just the “bloatware.” It actually just responds faster.
You can get it too, for free, for a year. Just check out microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/download.aspx [microsoft.com].
Firefox 3.5b99 w/ windows 7 glass effects

Brilliant little plugin here [neowin.net]. Allows for the window borders, menubars, statusbar to be transparent in Firefox 3.5b99. Here’s a screenshot:

Interestingly, 7 seems to just respond faster. Waking up the computer takes no time at all, for instance. Could this be the Windows that “just works?”
Windows 7, contd.

Well, going on 24 hours of Windows 7 (including backup and install time.) I have to admit, I like the appearance of it better than Vista, though it is very similar. The redesigned taskbar is effective and sharp. It starts up faster than Vista did, by a few seconds. Ultimately, I suppose it is faster than Vista, though Vista really ran well on this beast. No trouble so far with applications, other than Battlefield 2142 freaking out at first because of PunkBuster. A reinstall fixed that issue. Everything else has run without hesitation. I’ll be in touch!
More on Win 7

A few days ago, I posted [donetblog.com] that you could use Windows 7 for free for a year. It seems now that wasn’t entirely accurate:
“The release candidate for Microsoft Windows 7 will expire June 2010, and the software giant will let users know they need to pay to upgrade by shutting down the system every two hours [itpro.co.uk] for three months. According to Microsoft: “The RC will expire on June 1, 2010. Starting on March 1, 2010, your PC will begin shutting down every two hours. Windows will notify you two weeks before the bi-hourly shutdowns start. To avoid interruption, you’ll need to install a non-expired version of Windows before March 1, 2010. You’ll also need to install the programs and data that you want to use.”"
