Human Achievement Hour

by crazyskills on Mar.28, 2009, under uncategorized

“The Competitive Enterprise Institute plans to recognize “Human Achievement Hour” between 8:30pm and 9:30pm on March 28, 2009 to coincide with Earth Hour, a period of time during which governments, individuals, and corporations have agreed to dim or shut off lights in an effort to draw attention to climate change. Anyone not foregoing the use of electricity in that hour is, by default, celebrating the achievements of human beings.

We salute the people who keep the lights on and produce the energy that helps make human achievement possible. “

iPhone - Contract-Free

by crazyskills on Mar.27, 2009, under news

That’s right - Today, Apple announced selling the iPhone without a required AT&T contract [slashgear.com], though you will pay a premium - $599 for an 8G or $699 for a 16G.  This is great news though for those of us who don’t want to pay for an AT&T contract.

Cheers!

10 OS’s We Left Behind

by crazyskills on Mar.26, 2009, under news

This is a great article I stumbled on earlier today.  It deals with the 10 OS’s we “Left behind.”  OS’s that were before their time, those which defined the computing experience as we know it and others which are, well, better left behind.  This article was prepared in celebration of UNIX’s 40th birthday, which we’ll be celebrating this summer.

Good stuff!

The WayBackMachine

by crazyskills on Mar.25, 2009, under news

archive.org [archive.org] today announced a 4.5PB (yes you read that right, petabyte) increase in storage capacity [computerworld.com].  archive.org has been in the business of taking “snapshots” of 151 billion web pages since 1997.  As a matter of fact, they’ve got a number of snaps of the different phases in the evolution of crazyskills.com [archive.org].

crazyskills is in no way affiliated with archive.org or the WayBackMachine; I just thought the idea of increasing storage space by 4.5PB was newsworthy!

The new data center houses 63 Sun Fire servers, each with 48 1TB hard drives running in parallel…”

Now that’s impressive!

Attention Smokers…

by crazyskills on Mar.25, 2009, under news

“Do you want the cigarettes and other tobacco products you use to taste like “lard”?

That’s what supporters of the bill that would give the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authority over regulating cigarettes say they want to do.

The bill would give the FDA the right to make virtually any change they wanted to in the way tobacco products are made, flavored, packaged, advertised and priced. They could make products taste terrible, and jack up the cost even more.

Adults who use tobacco products NEED TO CALL their legislator TODAY to try to stop this bill.

Call 1-877-857-8074 (free call) and you can be connected to YOUR legislator’s office. All you need to know is your zip code and the operator will connect you to the right office.

Or you can go to www.NoCigTax.com [nocigtax.com] and send an email to your legislator – all you need to enter is your zip code and you’ll be connected to the right office.

Tell your legislator to vote AGAINST Representative Waxman’s bill that would give the FDA the authority to regulate tobacco.”

The Wailing and Gnashing of Teeth

by crazyskills on Mar.24, 2009, under stream of consciousness

No, I can’t see tomorrow when I close my eyes
There is no tomorrow, my gift is of no use

What’s the horse on the shore waiting for?

See, today wears a mask, today is a shadow
Today is meant to drag down, shelter and devour
Today is a gift fading beforehand
Today is a feast ending too early

Albeit unseen, albeit unveiled
There’s a troublemaker
Hiding heavy secrets

If I don’t see tomorrow then it must be black
It’s a land of sorrow full of deadened groans
Tomorrow has no colors, it feels like the night
It’s a pile of cinders instead of a fire
They did raze tomorrow to the ground

Light, the Gateway Drug

by crazyskills on Mar.19, 2009, under tech

Ripped from /.:

In an attempt to better understand how the reward system in the brain functions in people suffering from addiction, scientists at Stanford have created mice that are addicted to light [technologyreview.com]. They engineered light-sensitive proteins to trigger signaling pathways in the nucleus accumbens, a part of the brain that responds to pleasurable stimuli. They then connected a fiber-optic cable to this part of the brain and delivered a blast of light whenever the mice wandered into a “reward chamber”. In previous experiments the mice have been given drugs like cocaine or amphetamine when they enter these rooms. The light treatment works in exactly the same way but lets the researchers very precisely control timing and dose of reward administered to the brain. The approach could also provide a way to probe receptors that cannot be accessed using existing drugs.”

Fascinating.
