Google’s “This Site May Harm Your Computer”

by crazyskills on Jan.31, 2009, under news

This morning, for an hour or so, every search result Google brought up had this tag along with it — including cnn, some of google’s own pages and some of mine. The situation appears to be solved now, but it was definitely an issue up until a few minutes ago. I wonder what went haywire in the Google farm. I imagine this is probably the last you will hear of this glitch, for the time being anyway, but what could have happened if this issue was not repaired this morning as it was? False positives could cost people business. And now is not a good time to discourage business!

Tricky!

LHC might destroy world after all

by crazyskills on Jan.27, 2009, under news

Apparently, scientists are not now certain that the Large Hadron Collider won’t destroy the world.  Seems the microscopic black holes do not “simply evaporate in a millisecond as had previously been predicted.”

As the writer of the foxnews.com article [foxnews.com] points out, the “expected delay times are much longer than expected” and may reach a second or more; “[w]e’re also wondering how often the LHC might create individual black holes, since longer-lived ones have a greater chance of merging with each other, and, um, well, see ya.”

‘Til next time

Thinking, I

by crazyskills on Jan.24, 2009, under question, stream of consciousness

Curiouser and curiouser.

My mind is glowing.

Time is the fire in which we burn.

I would tell my friend to go out on a limb - accomplish your goals, dreams, desires, no matter the cost.

There’s a time for us to let go
There’s a time for holding on
A time to speak, a time to listen
There’s a time for us to go
There’s a time for laying low-down
There’s a time for getting high
A time for peace, a time for fighting
A time to live a time to die
A time to scream, a time for silence

A time to scream, a time for silence
A time for truth, against the lies
A time for faith, a time for science
There’s a time for us to shine

There is a time for explaining
There’s a time to understand
A time for hurt, a time for healing
Time to run to make a stand

Oh, this is the time of our lives
Oh, this is the time of our lives
Oh, this is the time of our lives
Oh, this is the time of our lives

Hold on, let go, get high, stay low, do not give up, so speak shout out
Hold on, let go, get high, stay low, do not give up, so speak shout out
Hold on, let go, get high, stay low, do not give up, so speak shout out
Hold on, let go, get high, stay low, do not give up, so speak shout out

There’s a time to run
There’s a time to die
There’s a time to live
So do not give up
There’s a time to run
There’s a time to die
There’s a time to live
So speak shout out

Time, Paul van Dyk

Friends

by crazyskills on Jan.24, 2009, under news

Should your wife have guy-friends? [cnn.com]  This article got me thinking the other day.  I think it is well-written and has a good message.  Here’s a clip:

“‘Jealousy over an opposite-sex friendship can be the result of projection,’ says Dr. Bonnie Jacobson, a New York City clinical psychologist and author of “Love Triangles: Seven Steps to Break the Secret Ties That Poison Love.”

‘People project onto another person something they would do,’ Jacobson says. ‘If Tom says to Sally, ‘I don’t want you to hang out with Harry,’ it’s very likely Tom feels he would violate that boundary [if he were in the same situation], so he imagines his wife will, too.’”

I am fascinated by people, interactions, motives.  I am fascinated with what makes people tick.

Somebody

by crazyskills on Jan.24, 2009, under stream of consciousness

I want somebody to share
share the rest of my life
share my innermost thoughts
know my intimate details
someone who’ll stand by my side
and give me support
and in return
she’ll get my support
she will listen to me
when I want to speak
about the world we live in
and life in general
though my views may be wrong
they may even be perverted
she’ll hear me out
and won’t easily be converted
to my way of thinking
in fact she’ll often disagree
but at the end of it all
she will understand me

I want somebody who cares
for me passionately
with every thought
and with every breath
someone who’ll help me see things
in a different light
all the things I detest
I will almost like
I don’t want to be tied
to anyone’s strings
I’m carefully trying to stay clear
of those things
But when I’m asleep
I want somebody
who will put their arms around me
and kiss me tenderly
though things like this make me sick
in a case like this
I’ll get away with it

More on the DRM front

by crazyskills on Jan.22, 2009, under news

Does anyone else [slashdot.org] think this is crazy?

Amazon and iTunes are finally getting it right - releasing mp3 files (songs) with no digital rights management.  Microsoft announces their new strategy today for the Zune series of mobile devices:  All DRM, all the time.  Furthermore, there is no way to get songs from your Zune onto your PC.  And get this - there is no way to copy your songs from your old Zune to your new one!  Add to that a higher price tag per song and you’ve got a recipe for .. umm .. success?  Say hello to MSN Mobile Music Service.

HP TC1100

by crazyskills on Jan.08, 2009, under tech

So I’ve got this tablet PC, the HP TC1100.  I hadn’t used it in awhile but broke it out a few days back to get it on the network.  Anyway, I started it up and got a BSOD.  Restarted.  BSOD.  Reloaded it last night; BSOD.  I was certain there was a hardware issue - perhaps a failing HDD or maybe even a bad chip of memory.  But not having extra tablet parts around, and not ready to give up, I did a quick search and found a post talking about a bad wireless driver with the 1100.  I disabled wireless in the BIOS, ran a cat-5 to the 1100, downloaded this file: sp33400.exe (intel wireless card driver), installed it, restarted, enabled wireless and bam!  No more trouble.
