Emergence, Gestalt
by crazyskills on Jun.30, 2008, under uncategorized

Emergence is demonstrated by the perception of the Dog Picture, which depicts a Dalmatian dog sniffing the ground in the shade of overhanging trees. The dog is not recognized by first identifying its parts (feet, ears, nose, tail, etc.), and then inferring the dog from those component parts. Instead, the dog is perceived as a whole, all at once. However, this is a description of what occurs in vision and not an explanation. Gestalt theory does not explain how the percept of a dog emerges. [wikipedia.org]

All Your Coffee Are Belong To Us

sliced from /.:
” Wolf nipple chips writes “Craig Wright discovered that the Jura F90 Coffee maker, with its honest-to-God Jura Internet Connection Kit, can be taken over by a remote attacker, who can cause the coffee to be weaker or stronger; change the amount of water per cup; or cause the machine to require service (call this one a DDoC). ‘Best yet, the software allows a remote attacker to gain access to the Windows XP system it is running on at the level of the user.’ An Internet-enabled, remote-controlled coffee-machine and XP backdoor — what more could a hacker ask for?”

Is a negative temperature Kelvin possible?
by crazyskills on Jun.12, 2008, under question
“The most often given answer to this question is something like “no, because at zero K, molecules are not moving anymore and you cannot have less than zero motion.”
This answer, while not completely wrong, ignores that temperature is not defined as motion of molecules. It is, for certain systems, equal to the mean kinetic energy of molecules, but this is an equality, not a definition.”

An interesting question, I think, and quite a complicated answer, though it does make sense.
Beer of the Day
by crazyskills on Jun.11, 2008, under news
http://www.beeroftheday.com has some great suggestions - mostly beers I have not heard of before. Included on the site is the following information, several photos and links to where you can buy today’s beer.
Today’s beer:
Liquid Sunshine Blonde Ale

Blonde Ale

Sacramento, CA

Liquid Sunshine is amazingly hoppy, which is very surprising for a blonde ale. It looks like a light lager but tastes like a mild IPA. Initially it is sweet with a lot of flavor, then turns to a hoppy aftertaste that is not the least bit bitter. This is an interesting beer that is definitely worth a try.

Next Processor Technology?
by crazyskills on Jun.05, 2008, under announcement
IBM has been working on “Layered” chips. “The chip’s components are built in a 3D stack instead of side by side on a silicon wafer.” These chips are watercooled by pipes as thin as a strand of human hair.
Apparently, “Chips built in a three-dimensional stack formation offer more pathways for info to be
processed and can shorten the distance chip information needs to travel by as much as 1,000 times.”
